Measuring carpeting to fit your room is often trickier than it looks, not to mention if you need to fit it onto stairs as opposed to a flat surface. The very first thing you should do is obtain a tape measure that is accurate and sturdy. The only other gear you will need is pen and paper.

Tips on how to measure stairs

First, you need to measure each stair individually. Look at the width and length of the step. The width is self explanatory, whilst the length of the step is a bit trickier. Including both riser along with the tread. The riser is the vertical part while the tread may be the horizontal piece that you just put your foot on as you walk up the stairs.

When you have totalled the size of carpeting which you will want, add approximately five centimetres (or 2 ") to the total. This gives you enough room to take into account any bulges and other variances when the time comes to fit the rug.
